Went to watch Hidden Orchestra this evening at Nottingham Contemporary. Beautiful calm sweeping music, all live, with multiskilled musicians on keyboards, samplers, drums, trombone, trumpet, electric double bass and violin.
The sell out seats in The Space meant as we crept in late we got to sit on the floor on squishy cushions, more gigs should be like this. Even the normally chatty Nottingham audience were quiet and attentive. The gig had an intimate, festival vibe with Hidden Orchestra so close Joe could introduce tracks and talk without the feeling of being removed from the audience.
The whole stage set up was so well composed, lights well placed to cast obscure shadows of the musicians, cameras with a live feed onto the screen, projecting Hidden Orchestra to overlook themselves.
The sound was warm and enveloping, but the gig felt so short it was such a relief when they came back for an encore, Hidden Orchestra are a band I could happily listen to for hours.
